Mahboob's Journal

Existential Thoughts, Experiential Inferences and Occasional Whacky Connections

Bye, Bye, Live Journal. Over to Blogger (blogspot)
mahboob

It's time to say bye, bye to this blog.

I wrote to LiveJournal support whether there is a way I can monetize my blog through ad revenue. Here is their response:

Thank you for your inquiry. LiveJournal does allow users to place advertising on their journal if they wish to do so, as long as they are not spamming communities or other journals, friending random users, or taking any other action to attempt to force viewership of their journal other than through normal use of the LiveJournal site.

However, we do not provide any recommendations or assistance with placing advertising on your journal. You may wish to consult your favorite search engine to search for relevant information that will work for your needs.

LiveJournal does not allow Google Adsense to be used with journals. While this used to be possible, it was discontinued a few months ago.

I enjoyed posting on LiveJournal, and it's now time to move over to another place more fruitful.

CSI event: Startup Student Symposium And Launch of and-beyond.com
mahboob

During the management committee meeting of Computer Society of India (CSI), Hyderabad chapter on 18-Apr-2012, I had suggested that we conduct a meetup between students and startup founders. We took the idea forward and I got quite involved in the organization. We had the event, “Start-up Student Symposium and Launch of and-beyond.com” on Saturday, 09-Jun-2012 at CSI office, Secunderabad. Here are the details of the half-day session:

Not My J
mahboob

It was 4th of May that I posted on my blog, so a full two months have gone by. Here in Andhra Pradesh, May undoubtedly was the month of the by-elections. Newspapers, TV shows, conversations with friends and relatives - not a day passed without discussing by-elections and Jagan.

Three Cheers To Versatility
mahboob

The first one is, I made a short video film. The Times of India released an ad depicting the The Hindu as boring the readers to sleep. The Hindu retaliated with ads on national TV channels showing how the Times of India readers are ignoramuses. I made a parody video on these ads. Well, the objective was not to make a world-class film; rather it was to go through the experience of conceptualising an idea, scripting, directing, shooting, and editing a video. My paraphernalia were Sony Handycam DCR-DVD908E and iMovie 09 on my iMac. I uploaded the video to YouTube; its URL is : Read more...Collapse )

Inductive Blogging and Recursive Writing
mahboob

For my latest blog post, I wanted to take a couple of statements about the Indian economy and use them as an example of economic jargon that needs to be simplified. As I worked on the post, I realized that it would be a (slightly) long-ish one. There were many things that I had to write to complete the story. In short, it was a mini-essay.

I distribute my writing between this site and Sulekha.com.

Flipkarting towards the internet economy
mahboob

I am very cynical of customer service in India, and you would know it if you have read my earlier posts (Unreported Dell SucksRingtones of Customer Non-ServiceSmall unpleasant experience on Spice Jet flight). But the situation is not that bad. One (and probably the only one) that gave me delight is Flipkart. But first a disclosure: I have no monetary / commercial involvement with Flipkart, other than being a buyer on their site.

Now the event: Last June (2011), I placed an order for a 8 GB Creative Zen X-Fi 2 video mp3 player. It was a gift to my daughter Ruwi. It was in a working condition, when received, but within 15 days, almost half of the screen went blank.

Technology in a socio-political-economic perspective
mahboob

The Economic and Political Weekly is a leftist magazine. I think it’s Ramachandra Guha who had likened it to The Nation published in the U.S.A. Regardless of the political orientation, its articles have a lot of data and analysis and cover society, politics and the economy.

But then, once in a while, the articles throw up a technology angle which makes up for some pleasant and interesting reading. In this post, I will cover three such articles. I don’t have the inclination and energy to paraphrase the technology references in the articles. So I give direct excerpts. English teachers & books may balk at writing by stringing a series of quotes. But this is a blog and I writing a blog post and not an essay.

Ground Rules
mahboob

When a person joins my team as a direct report, I inform them of some ground rules that we will follow. These are good principles and their application has been helpful towards creating a favourable image for me and my team in the organization. I accumulated them over the years. Hope you find them useful. I have also given the sources where I picked them from. The list may not be accurate and I will keep updating to make it complete over a period of time.

Valentine Day Scraping
mahboob

Recently when I was watching a discussion on TV, there was a mention of the Sachar committee report. I wondered if I had to read the report myself, where would I get it. After sometime, I remembered seeing the report somewhere and after scratching my head a few times, realized it was indeed in one of Rupa Subramanya’s blog posts - she had given a link to the report.

New Year Question
mahboob

Question is ‘what to do this year’? Hardly has the new year started, that one realizes it’s already week 7. I was still thinking of looking at last year’s to-do list and updating it and we are in February.
